It’s been four years since the first Greeley Grindhouse and Portland has gone through some interesting changes during that time. Craft beer and cider, local award-winning wines, and creative cocktails are still front and center, but now there’s a new law on the books that has taken the madness out of the reefer. Greeley Grindhouse is celebrating with the cult classic “Reefer Madness, (1936)” and a double feature of “Mesa of Lost Women” (1953).
This is Greeley Grindhouse’s second showing of the eighty-year-old tale of a marijuana “trip” gone bad. It’s a classic propaganda film set in a high school, where students, Mae and Jack, indulge in poor judgment and questionable behavior, all resulting in a string of horrible crimes and a descent into madness that just can’t be missed. You don’t have to be high to see the humor in this story of crazed, maniacal overacting.
“Mesa of Lost Women” was a special request by a friend of host, Mac Bell’s. It’s a six-decade-old film that is infamous for its horrific soundtrack that underscores the movie’s ridiculous plot and bad acting. Set in Mexico, a mad scientist creates a race of superwomen by injecting his unsuspecting subject with spider venom. It’s an exploitation movie that is typical of the genre director Ron Ormond ruled over before surviving a 1968 plane crash and turning to a Christianity to make up for his bad use of celluloid.
Save the date, Thursday, April 7th at 7:20pm for Greeley Grindhouse’s double feature of “Reefer Madness” and “Mesa of Lost Women!”
